After turning our lights off last month, what's next?

Did you know that Restaurant City is designed under the premise of the on-going fight against global warming?

Restaurant City is a social computer game developed by PlayFish, the same developer of Pet Society and Word Challenge.

The mission of each player is to create and manage his own restaurant. Several fun challenges are offered in this game like improving the cuisine and arranging furniture. Just like in real life also, the player must be able to raise money to buy equipment for his restaurant and nourishment for his employee. There are two ways to earn money in the game: through the restaurant and by shaking trees.

Yes! Shaking trees. When you click on a tree, a coin comes out from that tree that is added to your account. (Click picture to enlarge)

The design reminds us that there is money in trees without the need to chop it off. It only tells us that if we give nature a minute, perhaps, we can gain something from it. How amazing!

Another design detail which for me is a bit disturbing is how it interprets ecological footprint or the global hectares. In the game, as you level up, your restaurant expands. Sadly, as your place gets bigger and bigger, the trees surrounding you are removed. Look at the two backyards in the next picture.

The first picture is a level 4 restaurant which shows plenty of trees in his backyard while the level 21 restaurant on the next picture shows more space and less trees. Alarming! The price of success equates to the compromise of nature. A bittersweet truth.

Come on people. I know we can all do something to contribute to the fight against the degradation of our planet. We only have one planet and I can only receive an ingredient once from visiting a friend. Make your own restaurant and help save the world.

Oh, I also need kiwi. Trade, anyone?
